When a writer from Forbes magazine was asked how he would define a “great company,” one of the first things that came to his mind was employee satisfaction. To be great, a company should have employees that genuinely enjoy being part of the organization. Wisconsin Oven maintains an impressive roster of policies that make their workers happy, and talking to the employees themselves bears this out.
It’s important to keep a positive atmosphere at a company, but what about a company-owned facility to repair employees’ cars? Wisconsin Oven has one. Joe, who has worked as a welder/assembler for five and half years, confirmed this for me. He told me that workers can leave their vehicles there for fixes, and if they’re ready, they can pick them up at the end of the day to drive them home. This provides employees a level of convenience undreamed of by most companies.
Wisconsin Oven also has an employee recognition program called Work of Champions. Jason, a welder and assembler of 2 years, informed me that this program provides monthly recognition and a monetary reward for employees that go above and beyond. On this note, Jason also pointed out that extra work is often available for employees who are looking for it. He appreciates the fact that when workers are willing to put in extra effort, Wisconsin Oven welcomes it and responds with real rewards and opportunities.
And Jason also pointed out to me that Wisconsin Oven likes to keep the company and talent local. Dave Strand, President and CEO of the company, is a lifelong East Troy resident. “So am I,” Jason noted, showing pride in the fact that he worked for a company that highly values its local resources. To create a sustaining, successful company that keeps its home base in the community, serving the people who live, grow, and raise children there; this may be the greatest accomplishment of all.
For example, Patty, who has worked in Panel Wiring for the last five years, told me she finds the work environment comfortable, and not stressful—even when there’s a lot of work to be done. How can a company achieve this dynamic? By keeping the atmosphere encouraging, she tells me. “It’s nice to work with people who are always friendly,” she said. Even during the busiest times, an encouraging and positive atmosphere prevails at Wisconsin Oven.
